6/7/2023 0 Comments Austen mansfield park![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Unlike the other heroines, who have a myriad of lessons to learn, Fanny possesses the innate sensibility expected of a Regency lady of this era. As Adolphus Alfred Jack remarked in his 1897 Essay on the Novel, Mansfield Park is "more finished," "more subtle," and "quieter than her earlier works." As Austen grew older, he continues, "her powers grew and deepened.while Pride and Prejudice is gay, Mansfield Park is sombre." Indeed, it is of interest to note that it is Mary Crawford - witty, active, and unable to stand still - who is cast in the mold of other Austen heroines such as the effervescent Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice and the silly, meddling Emma Woodhouse in Emma, while it is the weak, mild-mannered, motionless, often ill Fanny Price who remains the novel's central character.and a highly likeable one at that. While Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice are considered, as one critic remarks "the gay offsprings of her youth," Mansfield Park is a far more mature, darker novel, written by a woman who had by then experienced more of the world. Mansfield Park, considered the author's most ambitious novel, was published anonymously, as were all of Jane Austen's novels, in 1814. ![]()

![]() ![]() The seedling that was the Rabbit Room has become something more like a tree birds can nest in its branches. The people who loved the books kept loving them, and they kept telling their friends, and the slow burn kept burning. ![]() But the people who loved the books kept loving them, and they kept telling their friends, and the slow burn kept burning. Through a series of events that I won’t detail, Waterbrook wasn’t able to continue the Wingfeather Saga beyond Book 2, and Books 3 and 4 ended up being released by Rabbit Room Press. The people who knew it loved it, but there are only so many seats in the blockbuster-making machine, and a lot of books that deserve to be blockbusters don’t get blockbustered. The Wingfeather Saga wasn’t what you’d call a blockbuster. The Wingfeather Saga was another of those seedlings. In March of 2008, the Rabbit Room was just a little seedling of a dream that Andrew Peterson had planted in the world for mere love of things that are good, true, and beautiful. There was just the blog, with a small but very loyal readership. There was no Hutchmoot, no Rabbit Room Press, no Local Show, no Chinwag, no North Wind Manor. At the time, the Rabbit Room was barely six months old. I counted it a privilege to be allowed to write the Rabbit Room’s release day review of the book. ![]() Twelve years ago this month, Waterbrook Press released On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, Book 1 of Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Alex craft series![]() ![]() Of course, that depended on having enough of the body at my disposal for my magic to fill in the gaps."Īfter a month spent recovering from a vicious fight with a sorcerer, Grave Witch Alex Craft is ready to get back to solving murders by raising the dead. You know you're having a bad day when Death is saving your life. Then, someone makes a serious attempt on her life, thwarted only by Death's intervention. Alex is investigating a high-profile murder when she's attacked by the ghost she is raising - which should be impossible. But even though she's on good terms with Death himself, nothing has prepared her for her latest case. Īs a private investigator and consultant for the police, Alex has seen a lot of dark magic. While it’s not the best written story (again, this is clearly Ito’s early days), it’s definitely one of the most interesting stories he has ever produced. When the end does hit, the art isn’t so over the top or overdrawn, making the surprise feel more eerie and dreadful. ![]() ![]() It makes the story more interesting, relying more on the slow buildup and world-building to provide the atmosphere. That smaller and more subtle approach is actually rather refreshing for Ito. ![]() However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s almost like a story I would expect to see in the original Twilight Zone. It’s very subtle and quiet, with such a small layer of eeriness to it. Given the style of the art, it was probably made very early in Ito’s career. There’s nothing particularly horrifying or shocking within its art like you might expect for a Junji Ito title or any particular intensity in the story. “Used Records” is such an odd, reserved title in a collection full of the macabre and nastiness. However, there’s more to this album than meets the eye and it’s one that leads her down a supernatural, uncomfortable route. The singer’s voice and the melody of it is just so enrapturing and moving that she wants the record badly. Our collection of horror and mayhem begins on a lighter tale, probably the lightest tale here, “Used Records.” A young woman named Nakayama is utterly entranced by this mysterious record a friend of hers, Ogawa, has. ![]() 6/6/2023 0 Comments Sphere by Michael Crichton![]() ![]() If you like SciFi or if you like Michael Crichton, you’ll enjoy. Not earth shattering prose, just good storytelling that will hold your attention. Sphere is a decent SciFi, written with the somewhat pedestrian style of Crichton. ![]() Albeit completely different stories, these initial fundamentals are virtually identical. Crichton even repeats the physical examinations required to handle the sea habitats of Sphere as apposed to the bio-habitat of the Andromeda Strain. A biologist, mathematician, astrophysicist, etc., in addition to Norman - the group psychologist and the lead character of Sphere, are tasked with determining what happened - and they are soon to understand, determining what exactly rests 1000 feet below the surface, since it is not an airplane. In a plot similar to Crichton’s Andromeda Strain, written in 1969, a diverse group of scientific people are brought together to what they all believe to be a plane crash in the mid-Pacific. If you’re looking for a written duplication of the movie, this is not gonna work for you! Although trite, I’ll say "The book is better."… and Hollywood’s twist completely messes with the story. Written by Michael Crichton way back in the mid 1980s, this unabridged audiobook edition was released in 2015 and is narrated by Scott Brick - about thirteen hours of listening. ![]() 6/5/2023 0 Comments The kite runner novel![]() ![]() And ensured that people understood Afghans, their pain and sorrow. ![]() That’s why writers like Khaled Hosseini chose the medium of fiction through which they shared the tales about their beloved country, their lives, and struggles with the world at large.
