There is little overt drama, yet from the outset, we sense that something terrible is coming, and it casts a shadow over the calm, sunlit descriptions of the women at work, study and rest. Much of the book’s first half is given to evoking the abbey and those within it. What can the women do?Īround these bones, Turtschaninoff weaves a hypnotic spell. He soon comes looking for her, bringing a boatload of mercenaries who want to pillage the abbey. A new novice arrives, fleeing a violent father. Stripped to its bare bones, the story is simple: Maresi is a novice in an abbey on an isolated island populated only by women. ![]()
